My parents and my sister came to visit me on Sunday. It was the best day I have had in a very long time. Work has kept me busy, so a trip back home or a visit to my sister in Fort Worth has been out of the question.

When times get stressful and a little bit hectic, there is nothing like a visit from family to calm you down and bring you back to earth.

When I first heard they were coming down, I did what every person does when they know a visitor is coming to town - I cleaned my apartment and fast! My parents have not fully admitted to this, and I am sure I will get a phone call after they read this column, but another reason they visit (shouldn’t it just be to see me? Haha) is to eat local seafood.

My dad is in love with the shrimp and catfish. So before their arrival, I drove to Buddy’s Seafood and got them 10 pounds of fish, which was quickly frozen for them to take back home.

And this was the first time my sister came to visit me too. Very nerve breaking, felt like I was meeting a boyfriends family for the first time. (Bad example, but let’s not get into that now.)

Every time they come and visit, I always get nervous because I want to show them everything I do when I am working everyday.

A tour of the Matagorda Advocate took place and a drive around the city, too.
The last time my parents were here, I took them to the beach and we walked on the pier. We also drove past South Texas Project.

My mom always wonders (and worries) about the places I go cover and visit for stories. One she was very curious about was the nuclear power plant. (Search Matagorda Advocate.com for blog titled, “Nuclear power plant tour off the bucket list.” By far the best bucket list item, in my opinion.) So we drove past the nuclear power plant.

Other places my parents wonder about are the places I check in on Foursquare. (An iPhone app that lets you “check in” wherever you go.) My parents caved in and decided a few months ago to get a Facebook account. My mom said this is one of the best ways to follow and see what I am up to. Like I have said before, I get busy and forget to call her. Sorry mom, I will call more often!

Another place she wondered about was K2’s Steakhouse. Yes, we went there too. Since I had written an article about the restaurant last year, I was able to tell them about the history of the place.

The visit was quick but fun. Always fun to see them. Now that I am older, I appreciate my family more. They have been there for me and supported me in all the decisions I have made. So glad they came to visit! What do you do when family visits? Let me know, aacosta@vicad.com
