Driving down the highway a couple nights ago, I found the perfect accompaniment to the incredible light show Mother Nature was displaying in advance of the latest cold front - Pink Floyd's "One of These Days". The backlit clouds combined with the pulsating rhythms of Pink Floyd was better than any laser show I have paid money to get into.
Pink Floyd is still echoing in my head after all this time. It is hard to put into words just what this band has meant to me. Their music has been companion to so many good times and bad times that I find it impossible to untangle my experiences from their soundtrack. How can I adequately describe the feeling I get to this day when I put on The Dark Side of the Moon (released in 1973 as what most fans consider their definitive work and engineered by Alan Parsons, who is a genius in his own right, but that's a whole other blog), Wish You Were Here, The Wall, and so many other great albums? I suppose the best way to convey to you all Pink Floyd means to me is to let the music speak for itself.
Although it is hard to limit Pink Floyd videos to just a chosen few, limit I must. Here are my choices for some of their best works, with outstanding videos accompanying each. Maybe these will compel you to listen to the albums themselves, or buy them if you aren't fortunate enough to have them in your collection. I also hope that you are inspired to give a look at 2001: A Space Odyssey, which is set so appropriately to "One of These Days", and, most of all,to Pink Floyd's The Wall, an incredible movie which expands on the story the album tells. It is a most amazing film, one that gets better with each viewing. I encourage you to rent the DVD, or better yet, buy it, because once you have seen it, you will likely become a repeat viewer, as have I.
First up is the song that inspired me to blog about my favorite band: "One of These Days", off their 1971 album Meddle. This, combined with second video, "On the Run", from The Dark Side of the Moon, has to be one of the greatest instrumental tracks of all time. Next up is "Have a Cigar", a cut off their 1975 album, Wish You Were Here. "Have a Cigar" is a scathing indictment of the business that is music, featuring one of the best guitar interludes of all time. The next video featured is "One of My Turns" off their 1979 double album, The Wall. I was in junior high when this work came out, and it impacted me as no other album has before or since.
Which brings us to the last video, "Comfortably Numb". Personally, this is the Pink Floyd song that means the most to me, and I feel is the best cut from The Wall. It also contains toward the end of the song what I consider to be the best guitar solo EVER. David Gilmour is simply astounding. If you ever get a chance to see Pink Floyd in concert, I cannot recommend them highly enough. They must be seen to be believed.
SO! Enjoy these vids, preferably with a black light and incense....the way they were meant to be enjoyed. Whether you prefer your Pink Floyd with or without Syd Barrett ( I love both equally), nobody else sounds like them; they are one-of-a-kind. There is only one Pink Floyd. Long may they reign.

Thanx, rooroo241. I haven't seen your name before on the VicAd. If you are new to the site, I hope you enjoy the various blogs and discussion forums. If you're not new, well, where ya been! I'm glad you liked the post; it feels good, although a littleĀ surprising to know that a younger generation is into Floyd as well. It lends credence to my belief that their music is truly timeless.
