Well, well.....looks like I owe an apology to the New York Giants. Before I begin an explanation, let me just put forth that I am by no means a sports fan, and would never pretend to be an expert. But how many people (including yours truly) thought that the magical season for the Patriots would continue and they would walk away undefeated, with the trophy in hand at the end of tonight? Wow, to call the end of the game today an upset is an understatement for sure.
I remember making a remark when the Patriots made their first touchdown of tonight that someone just got "owned", and I meant that the Patriots were the ones doing the owning! Whoops......open foot, insert mouth. Yummy. How many of you were surprised at the outcome tonight? I wonder how much money was won and lost across this nation on this one game? I think now would probably be a pretty sweet time to be a bookie, in Las Vegas or elsewhere.
So, how do yall feel about the outcome of tonight's Super Bowl? What was your favorite moment? What did you think about the commercials?
Oh, and the sports thing.....this will likely be the only sports-related posting you will see from me, as I don't pretend to know squat about that world. However, how many of you have noted the color I am posting in? That would be Columbia Blue, as in Luv Ya Blue, as in the Houston Oilers. Okay, laugh if you must. That is the only football team I ever really cared about. Maybe I don't "do" sports anymore because I couldn't stand to get my heart broken in that way again, having to say goodbye to a team that I loved (and no, the Texans are not the same. Never will be.) Being a native Houstonian, one would think that I should be used to disappointment and heartbreak when it comes to professional sports. For chrissake, they don't even play in the Astrodome (the 8th wonder of the world!) anymore. *SIGH* Not that the Oilers are there anymore TO play, anyway. How many of you remember the glory days, when we almost "kicked that door down", of Dan Pastorini, Bum Phillips, Earl Campbell...the magical years of 1978-1980, when we were on the edge of the Super Bowl, but couldn't quite get there. But no matter. The most magical thing about those years was the fact that although we didn't make it, we still loved our Oilers. I remember the crowd at the Astrodome when the Oilers came home from a crushing loss to our greatest rival, the Pittsburgh Steelers, dashing our hopes for Super Bowl glory. That crowd to greet our Oilers, in their defeat, was even larger than the crowds were at their winning games. THAT is Houston in a nutshell, what makes my hometown so special. We loved our Blue, for sure, and wanted to let them know that. We wanted our guys to know that they didn't let us down, but rather, they elevated us, in spirit and love, even in defeat. They were OUR Oilers.
So, before I make myself BLUE, here is a song for you. If any of you remember it, I hope you enjoy it. Just listening to it brings back a flood of memories, all good. I still have the 45 somewhere, and I am sure it is thoroughly scratched and worn out. Is it cheesy? Yea, it is. But even now, I remember those guys giving this Houston gal a feeling she never had before, and never will again. For a couple years, I lived and breathed sports, following every move the Oilers made and reveling in it all. I like to believe that is what the spirit of the Super Bowl is all about. So when I say I am not a sports fan, and I don't "get it", well, the truth is, maybe I am and I do. Luv Ya, Blue!

Oh yeah!
January 23, 2011 at 6:09 p.m.CF - taken in the mode intended! (as a compliment). Your mother is a wise woman! I love the story about the labor after the fact, bet she was ready to kick that doctor, haha! What a game last nite, eh? I thought it was hit and miss with the commercials but they did have a decidedly different tone than last year's. All in all, a fine night.
February 4, 2008 at 7:30 p.m.This post sounds like it was written by my mother, who was a HUGE Oilers fan "back in the day" (trust me, this is a COMPLIMENT, not an insult, LOL!). She still is, as a matter of fact. She even says the same things you do (the Texans aren't the same, etc). In fact, she LOVES to tell the story of how she was supposed to go to an Oilers game on the weekend before I was born because that was her due date, and the doctor did not want her to climb the stadium stairs (this was in September '77, and she and my dad were living in Channelview at the time). So, she watched the game from home--only to go into labor a WEEK LATER, haha! She said that she was quite upset about that for some time. :-)
I also remember having a few of those "Luv Ya Blue!" T-shirts around the house as a kid, as well. Good times, good times.
I watched the game yesterday, too, and thought that it was pretty awesome, especially the fourth quarter, heh. I was pleasantly surprised by the commercials this year, too. Last year's weren't as funny and original as this year's batch.
February 4, 2008 at 8:25 a.m.Hey, Shurelee, I resemble that remark! Although mine will never be shown on national TV. Who the hell wants to see that, anyway? Uh.....don't answer that....just glad they finally got a decent halftime act this year. Petty Rocks!
February 3, 2008 at 10:20 p.m.A hundred years or so go when I was an early teenager, I was a Giants fan so I cheered for them tonight; but later I was a Miami Dolphins fan. I was living in Miami and had season tickets for the Perfect Season since the tickets weren't that expensive in those days. So I was glad to see the Dolphins perfect season record still standing.
February 3, 2008 at 9:57 p.m.WoW! What a game!! I was on the edge of my seat the whole second half!
At least we weren't to exposed to a forty year old, sagging, naked breast at half-time this year.
