Full disclosure: this posting may be of limited interest. Those of you who might be interested, you know who you are. Today is the 61st birthday of a most talented man. He began life as David Jones, morphed into Ziggy Stardust, became the Thin White Duke, lived a double life as the Goblin King, and has made me happy for the last 30 years of my life. Happy Birthday, David Bowie!
For as long as I can remember, David Bowie has fascinated me. He was always larger than life, it seemed, and when I hear his music emanate from the stereo, I am transfixed to this day. He has, through his songs, defined so many moments in my life. The ch-ch-ch-ch-changes he has gone through reflect changes in my life. I remember his face plastered on my walls as a teen, and his albums in constant rotation on the turntable. When I got old enough to see him in concert, I didn't dare stop at one. I have seen him live in various venues, from small, intimate clubs to large arenas, and he has yet to disappoint. He is not only a supremely talented artist, he is smart enough to surround himself with equal talent. The first concert of his that I attended, none other than Peter Frampton was playing guitar in his band! When I saw him many years later, at Rockefeller's West in Houston, I was close enough to the stage to actually TOUCH him. And he didn't mind. In fact, I think he was rather amused. He has a very high regard for his fans and always gives freely of himself in concert.
One of my most treasured possessions is a Christmas gift which I received many years ago. My ex-boyfriend, fully aware of my love for David Bowie, commissioned an artist to draw a pencil and ink portrait of Bowie. The result was stunning, and such a surprise. It was beautifully framed, and quite large. It is truly a one-of-a-kind piece of artwork, just like Bowie himself. It will always belong on my walls.
I have included some videos showcasing the artistry of David Bowie over the years, from one of his earliest, "Space Oddity" to "Ashes to Ashes". There is also a very good live version of "Heroes", followed by an outstanding live version of "The Man Who Sold the World". More current Bowie is displayed, along with the very talented Trent Reznor, in "I'm Afraid of Americans". Lastly is one of my favorite David Bowie songs, and one you don't hear very often, "Thursday's Child". I hope you enjoy all these offerings from a true renaissance man: singer, musician, actor, businessman....and absolute heartthrob. As most men do, David Bowie has gotten better as he has gotten older. So for all you Bowie fans out there - hope this helps you celebrate his birthday. May he have MANY more!

WOW! Amazing, guys! I can't believe the response! Thanx so much for helping celebrate David Bowie's birthday with me! Pilot, Chris, Shawn, Leslie - I'm really surprised and heartened! I agree with all of you, and yea, Pilot, for me it's not Christmas until I hear that, and my mom was a BIG fan, too.......perhaps a Bowie concert will be in your future. He's still active as always, and I don't see him slowing down, thank goodness!
January 10, 2008 at 7:17 a.m.Seriously, how can you say a post about David Bowie is of limited interest? Best...pop star... EVER.
January 9, 2008 at 11:25 a.m.Bowie is the ultimate pop star. Every few years he (ch-ch-ch) changes completely into a new persona - oine that usually is just ahead of the curve as far as the trends. He's also one of the few artists that can make an album like "Low" and then follow it a decade later with somehting like that "Dancing in the Streets" cover, and it all seems to fit into who he is.
January 9, 2008 at 11:05 a.m.His appearance on "Extras" last year (or the year before?) was hysterical.

Ground control to Major Tom -- I'm a fan, too. "Cat People" is a little-known song of his that knocked me over when I saw the movie. Thanks for the musical trip down memory lane.
