So spring is finally here! Despite the clouds and sprinkles we have had of late, the smell of Spring is in the air. A dear friend of mine told me a while back that clouds will part and the sun will shine once again. And indeed, that has happened in my life, as I hope it will for him. I know that for us in South Texas, Ol' Sol will come out soon, and give some light to the beautiful bluebonnets, Indian paintbrushes, Indian blankets, primroses, phlox, and winecups now in bloom. What a gorgeous sight to behold! It makes my heart glad to be a native Texan. I am firmly convinced that this is the most beautiful state in the nation, especially at this time of year.

Is there any sweeter smell than those orange-tinged blooms on the huisatche tree? Or the fruit trees that look like they are covered with perfumed snow? My grandmother's blood-red Easter lillies are in bloom now, and they are a sight for sore eyes. To me, the smell of freshly cut grass is simply intoxicating, and the sound of children playing outside now that warmer weather is here is like music.

Do you and your family have any springtime traditions? I was in a resale shop just the other day when my eyes spied something I have not seen in many years - a croquet set! My family used to play croquet in our backyard in Houston many years ago. Whatever happened to that set, I really don't know. I have thought about that used set I saw in the shop, and am seriously considering going back to get it, if it hasn't already been sold. Do many people even play croquet, or badminton, anymore? When I was a child, my father hung a tire swing from a tree branch, and my long, lazy days were spent playing on that tire swing, and climbing trees. My grandmother had a mimosa tree that I loved to climb, especially in May when the tree was flowering. Now that was a sweet smell!

What do YOU love most about spring? Do you enjoy the chance to start a garden, tend to your plants, fight the yellowjackets, and watch the hummingbirds and butterflies? I definitely do. I can't think of a more appropriate and lovely spring song than "Here Comes the Sun" by my favorite band, The Beatles. Enjoy this video, and enjoy these lovely spring days we are having!

  • Pmccloud- you bring up a really good reason to grow your own vegetables! As a youngster living in Houston, most of our food came from the local Food Giant, of course, but right next door to us, my grandparents grew a gorgeous little garden in their backyard most years, and I remember the thrill of walking in that garden, and tasting my grandmother's freshly cooked collard greens, tomatoes, cabbage, etc. that was home-grown. I also remember they had a pear tree in the back, and that was amazing to me as a city kid. I consider myself lucky that I knew both worlds, as most city kids, especially nowadays, might never get to see where that produce actually comes from, and they may never experience the joy of consuming vegetables and fruits they have lovingly grown by hand.
We also enjoy fishing, just from the piers at Port Lavaca and Copano bay. We haven't been able to get out to do that in quite some time, but I hope we will soon. I know that my cats LOVE me when I come home all stinky from a fishing trip, wondering if I have brought them any of that wonderfully pungent stuff!

  • We really don't have any spring traditions, but I have been wanting to start a garden like we had when I was a kid. You never know when those trucks will stop moving and bringing us fresh produce or risking all the possible contaminations that "fresh" vegetables may contain. Scary!
I enjoy bird watching. Animals are just neat, anyway, but birds come in such neat colors. This is also the time to start fishing before it gets too hot. We don't own a boat, but we fish off the coast down in PL or Port O'Connor. Sometimes we go river boat fishing, but that doesn't happen too often.
