While going through some items, old, new, and in between for our upcoming garage sale, I stumbled upon many of my childhood books. Truthfully, many were not in good shape, being stored for far too long under harsh conditions. Some were salvageable; included in these were several "Peanuts" books and assorted other comic-type magazines.
Does anyone remember a comic character called "Rebel" from the mid to late 1960's by author Fred Fredericks? He was a typical hepcat teenager of the day, along with his friends Wreck and Groover. As I read the comic that I had forgotten about all these years, I remembered how I enjoyed Rebel and company. To me, a child, I thought that this represented the teens of the times. In fact, they seemed to me to be very much like my aunts and her friends - you know, groovy but still good kids who were just trying to get through school while working a part-time job.
I remember wanting so badly to grow up and be a teenager, too. To be able to go out on dates, to drive a car, to have a job. I do recall someone (an adult, naturally) telling me to be careful what I wish for, that it would come soon enough. And of course, it did.
But now that I sit here reading "Rebel" and once again living his adventures, I feel young all over again. He has been waiting for me to dig him out of storage all these years, I think. It's nice to see you again, Rebel!
