Lovely little purple flowers, scattered all about our yard.
This was the sight that greeted me yesterday morning. Unexpected, and seemingly born overnight, these tiny blooms surprised me and my family. They are a welcome sight, as they will surely herald the kaleidoscope of beauty to come as South Texas digs herself out from winter and rushes headlong into spring.

I once knew someone who loved to go on road trips just to listen to music and see the flowers. He called the color explosion in spring, "Tie-dye on the Highway", after the Robert Plant song. When the wildflowers bloom each year, it brings to mind that person and that wonderful tune, and I love nothing more than hearing it while taking a nice, long, road trip.

Yesterday, driving home, I heard a lovely song that is played much too infrequently these days. I always thought of it as an appropriate "road tune" that is an excellent accompaniment to traveling "just to travel". It always makes me feel so peaceful and centered. So as you head out within the next few weeks to view the wildflowers that are sure to pop up, keep this song in mind. While you may not be searching for anything, don't be surprised if you find something after all.

  • I listened to 4 Way Street so much when I was a teenager. I wore out my 8 track driving around Victoria. I always loved it. The acoustic and the electric. Stephen Stills and Neil Young's guitar is great. Maybe it does not showcase their great harmonies as much as it could but it is certainly some great music. The Y added to the CSN makes them a supergroup. I have seen them live with and without Neil Young. It's all the difference in the world. Even Stephen Stills says he plays better when Neil Young is playing with him.

  • If you want CSNY to win that prize, you'll have to throw out the Y. Why? He's the most nasal, whiny voice in Canada and the United States.

Also, you'll have to throw out that 4 Way Street album. Even Stephen Stills said he was ashamed his name was on it.

  • Wow. What a question! Now you have me thinking, Kyle!

I would say, CSN&Y. Also, for my money, Emerson, Lake, & Palmer. The Byrds could also throw out some beautiful sounds, as did the Mamas and Papas. In addition, I would list the Temptations. They had some of the most outstanding vocals EVER, and Christmas is not Christmas for me without their "Silent Night". Can't beat those Motown and Doo-Wop groups for classic harmonies.

As far as current groups go, I love the sound of Alice In Chains. There's just something so special and recognizable about their harmonies.

  • Who would win the best vocal harmony prize- CSN(Y), Simon and Garfunkel or someone else?

    February 20, 2011 at 9:02 a.m.

  • OK, so if we're naming favorite CSN (& sometimes Y) songs, I would say "Wooden Ships" and "Deja Vu". So many wonderful ones, really, why would we want to choose?

"If you smiled at me, I would understand. Cause that is something everybody everywhere does in the same language..."

    Great picks, all!

  • There was a time when "Wasted On the Way" got airtime on the oldies station. Sigh! That and "Southern Cross" have joined my playlist of favorite songs on my computer. Lord knows I'll never hear them on the radio.

  • Is this like an inkblot test? Are the bunnies male? Maybe I'm looking at it wrong.

  • I do see bunnies!!! How cute! I love everything about Spring from the flowers to the weather. I always suffer from wanderlust around this time, I have an overpowering need to aimlessly drive & listen to music & I love that song! I hear it often on Classic Vinyl on Sirius & I am always excited when it comes on. Thanks for sharing the pics...I can't wait til I start spotting them in my neck of the woods!!!

  • Aw, SugarM! Thanks for that. It's nice to know I'm missed. My cooking blog went away with the old website, I'm sad to say. Thanks for the pretty pictures and bringing up the memories. It's fun to relive some of my past creativity.

  • LAHightower, how delightful to hear from you! Where have you been keeping yourself lately? I sure miss your blogs!

"Bunny flowers"! I never thought of that but you're right. I think they look like smal little pansies in a way, only in real miniature form.

Jared, thanks for stopping by. I'm sure your kids are just as thrilled as you when they see all the beautiful spring flowers; it never really gets old, does it, the waiting to see where one will spot the first bluebonnet of the season. Makes for a gorgeous drive in our Lone Star state this time of year.

  • I used to call those "bunny flowers." They look like little purple rabbits, if you look at them from the right angle.

  • Thanks for pictures, love this time that is approaching and looks to be here! I remember also going on road trips growing up and stopping by the fields of bluebonnets, Indian paint brushes, etc. It is a welcome surprise!
