How does the president of the local steel workers union 4370 over at the Point Comfort Alcoa manufacturing plant get arrested for theft by check and still hold this top position? This latest arrest was Sept. 26, 2009 for Larry Clayton (Clay) Maxwell over in Port Lavaca for theft by check. What kind of union representation do they have? I think we all agree that accidentally bouncing a check in understandable. I could simply ignore this behavior once but not multiple times. To ignore the collection process until it catches up with you in the form of a warrant for your arrest is simple theft. Do the hard working union members who pay their dues not deserve better representation than this? I feel that he should step down from his position. One would think that a union presidency position would require ethical behavior at the very least. Theft offenses in Tx. are by law considered crimes of moral turpitude. Here is the link to the newspaper's arrest blotter.

  • Clint, I can assure you I am not defending Clay. I am trying to say that if the issue is his illegal activities then say so but don't imply that he is still representing the union.

  • It seems that no further damage can be done with him no longer president so I am dropping it. I wish the man well and hopefully he has learned from his mistakes and won't let it happen again in the future.

  • Hopefully whoever the treasurer is, he is capable of keeping their books out of the red. Clay Maxwell was the leader of these local union memebers and he spoke on their behalf. All this while avoiding phone calls and registered letters to his home regarding his checks being no good. He avoided this right up until the moment he was arrested. It would be different if he had tried to make it right when he realized he had a problem. We all get bank statements that tell us what clears and what doesn't. He sucessfully got away with this until the moment of the arrest, multiple times. That is theft, no other explanation. Unbelievable!

  • Larry Maxwell is not the union president. Elections were held early this year, and he didn't run for re-election.

  • Troof, you are right he is no longer the prez however I am right also. He was the prez when his prior arrests occured. Was he honest, ethical, good representation for the members and especialy was he trustworthy during those arrests? I suppose that would be the real question here. It's a good thing for the members that he is no longer the president but facts remain facts, he was the president when he was behaving unethically and illegally. Does him no longer being president make those prior illegal acts excusable? Are you defending him personally or illegal behavior while in that type leadership position.

  • Clay is no longer the union president. Get current info and you won't look so uninformed with your next comment.

  • I was told it is Terry Bonds is the new president.
Glad to see Clay Maxwell is no longer president. Wonder if he handles money for the local union or has a financial input. If so, get rid of him. I read about this on another site also and it said he had numerous theft by check arrests that had been reported in various newspapers. Maybe someone should go back and do an audit of his time as president.
