October 4th is approaching fast and you might wonder why you might have any concern. October 4th is the deadline to register to vote in the coming General Joint Election. It is also the deadline to update your voter registration status if you have moved within the county.
Many voters assume once they register they are registered forever. This would be true if nothing ever changed in their lives. But as we all know, things change. One of those changes is a change of residence and since your residence location is fundamental to your voter registration, when you change your residence you must change your registration.
Now most people go to the post office and change their mailing address. They also spend lots of time notifying their friends and relatives of the new house or new apartment. But they often forget they must update their voter registration until it is too late.
Voter registrations, whether they are new registrations or changes to registration information, are not effective for thirty days from the date of submission. Hence we have a registration deadline of October 4th this year.
Now you might get your calendar out and count the number of days back from the November 2, 2010 General Joint Election. You would come up with October 4th being less than thirty days from the election. Here is a small example of how government works properly. There is a grace period until the first business day.
If you are a registered voter in Victoria County and don't update your address after moving you would be required to return to your old polling place to vote in this election. A move across the street or even next door wouldn't make this a big problem. But a move across town or out into the country could mean driving as much as twenty miles to vote.
If you need to make changes to your voter registration information you could call our office at 576-0124. Time is running out and you may want to come by the office at 111 N. Glass before 5 pm on Monday, October 4th to apply for or change your voter registration. Our office is open from 8 am to 5 pm, weekdays.
