Victoria College Who runs it? The citizens of Victoria County do not. Have you ever seen a vote on members. I haven't, much less, who are they? They raised our tax rate when they should of closed it or made it a self sufficient college and take it off the property tax rolls. The citizens of Victoria County have no control over it like we do of the VISD and VISD has no control at all over Victoria College. Consider this. UHV is now a 4 year college and Victoria College is not needed. Sell it to UHV.

  • What are you talking about? If VC no longer existed, alot of people would never be able to afford to go to college. Junior Colleges are great for opportunities. Their tuition fees aren't as high as universities. Plus, a lot of students can save the money by knocking out basics at VC rather than pay the loads of money to start their college careers at 4-year universities. Students who really don't want to be that far from home can go to VC and get a decent education. Students from surrounding counties can start college at VC and bring their parents' money along with them to the Victoria Economy. If VC wasn't around, they would just all have to make the drive to WCJC and just spend their money there.

If there was no Junior College in Victoria, I never would have been able to go to college. UHV fees are way too high. Even with the scholarships I was awarded, I could only afford to go to VC. The same is true for a great number of students.

I understand your argument, and I also think VC should be able to sustain itself on it's fees without needing tax payer money. To think that we need to get rid of VC to get rid of the problem is just irrational thought.

    Just my 2 cents.

  • OTH: Why do you think enrollment is up at Victoria College? Victoria College provides much more than academics. The vocational offerings are fantastic and are a boon to the Victoria area, especially in the healthcare field. UHV may be a four year university on paper, but where are their student housing facilities, cafeteria, infirmary, on-site police service, etc, etc.? There will always be a need for a junior college in Victoria regardless of whether UHV makes it as a 4-years school or not. The small amount they get in taxes is minute in comparison to VISD. Victoria will do well to support both VC and UHV and try and educate as many of our young people as possible.
