I wrote a story that published today about the local problem with pet euthanasia. More than 4,000 dogs and cats die needlessly each year at the local animal shelter.

Despite that somber statistic, local efforts helped to decrease the euthanasia rate from 5,000 per year to 4,000. To read that story, click here.

Louise Hull-Patillo, a local real estate broker, leads agents in a grassroots effort to curb pet euthanasia and encourage adoption from the shelter and local pet agencies. She passed on some new, good news:

"Great new billboards should be posted this week. We managed to get the design work donated and the money for the production cost. Lamar is posting them as PSA's," Hull-Patillo said. "Outburst advertising did the designs, the Dog Obedience Club and the Victoria Kennel Club donated money as well as June Stone and Sheila Newland. The book I mentioned to you, "Redemption," lists an aggressive spay/neuter program as one of their steps to no-kill. It also says that it takes a commitment on the part of the community to stop the killing. I am just sure there are more things that can be done without the tax payers spending an additional $5 million plus $2 million per year!"

What are other ways to help curb the euthanasia rate?
