UPDATE: An hour after saying Chantal was weakening, an Air Force reconnaissance plane has determined that the Chantal remains a tropical storm.

Tropical storm warnings are now in effect for the Dominican Republic, Haiti and the southeastern Bahamas.A tropical storm watch is in effect for Jamaica and the central Bahamas.

About 9 a.m. Wednesday, NOAA is reporting that Tropical Storm Chantal is weakening and may be degenerating into a tropical wave. The storm is about 260 miles west southwest of San Juan, Puerto Rico. The tropical storm warning for Puerto Rick has been discontinued and the tropical storm watch for the U.S. Virgin Islands has also been discontinued. Chantal's maximum sustained winds are at 45 mph and its moving at 29 mph.
