I was reading all the comments about Victoria not having anything to draw new industry and business along with tourists and this is what I think Victoria should do.

The city and county already have a vast unused asset in all the gravel pits it has under its control already it just needs to to be developed. My idea would be to divert the river so it runs through all those gravel pits by creating a huge lake between the 2 bridges on loop 77 south to us highway 59 where they are rebuilding the bridge and put flood gates on the old river bed to create a river walk type of setup like San Antonio has. If you look at an aerial photo of this area it is almost all water there now.

This would accomplish 6 things. #1 it would stop the city and riverside park from flooding. #2 it would create a vast new lake to supply Victoria's water needs. #3 it would supply the county and state with all the fill dirt it ever needed and could be sold as a revenue source to help pay for the project. #4 once developed it would supply this area with all kinds of recreational possibilities.#5 the city and county already own a large portion of this land which is mostly flood plane anyway and by constructing a levee on the city side of this new lake would protect the city from future floods. #6 Victoria could then build a new community center on this site that we could be proud of along the existing riverbed along with the water park talked about in earlier blogs that could be owned by the city and/or a private company.

Now I know that this would not all happen overnight but could be developed over a 5-20 year period. A project like this would be some thing Victoria could be proud of.
