Last night I get a phone call from my mother concerned and upset about the latest story on the local news. She began sputtering out something about cell phone numbers had to be reported to the do not call list or telemarketers will be able to contact you through your cell number. Seriously, I know that most of the older generation in Victoria watches the Victoria News. I watch Houston News because of this sort of thing. Do they not double check their resources? Did someone in the office receive one of the emails that was "do this or beware."

For everyone who saw this story and has questions, I will be the one to let you know the facts. NO telemarketers cannot call your cell phone. NO you do not have to report your cell phone numbers to the DNC list.

I went through this when my mom got a computer and cell phones. I taught her to get a backbone on the crazy calls and just delete the emails. If it was not from someone she knew....delete it. If it was important the sender would contact her again. Just like the phone there were virus scams abound.

Instead of sending here or there delete, blow a whistle in their ear. If you listen to the entire call sometimes gives number to get on their do not call list.

Many a time I have tracked down the CEO or president of the company or board of directors to get the calls stopped. It took me two weeks but I finally got a bank to quit calling when the rest of the nation was still having problems. Tracked them through a call center in India to the Investment Bank in Washington to the Board of Directors. And then I published all the information online at who is this. Have also posted the information on wikapedia regarding marketing practices.

When CEOs, Board of Directors and management all of sudden have their phone numbers publically posted for anyone in the nation to call who is po'd on being harrassed by their sales department --it can change their practices quickly.

I firmly believe do unto the orininator as they do unto me --if at all possible. There is no excuse for the telemarketing harrassment calls.

One of the best for live voices regarding how to invest your money --ask them when the van with the free money is going to arrive --when it does you will invest.

  • I use caller ID at home and rarely if ever actually pick up the phone. My cell is all I rely on for the most part. I have had very few telemarketers and spam calls, but nonetheless, there have been a few to my cell. One of my pet peeves is when fundraisers call from a number that broadcast no info. With the cell, I have to answer as it might be work related. At home I can just let it ring off the wall. (Volume down of course.)

  • You wouldn't believe how many calls I get about that Cat! They have even resorted to sending it in the mail and in emails now.

  • Cat- My mom and dad are elderly and only use the phone if they have car trouble to call me. They do not order anything online nor do they give out the number to anyone other than myself and sister. They have a home phone, so this is not their main phone line. The older crowd who is like my parents needs to be informed properly not just one big scarey story of do this or this will happen.

  • Here is another duh issue, some people only have a cell phone --if you give that out enough times, yes it will make the telemarketers lists plus all the marketing departments of companies with whom you do business --including your banks if you have a visa bank card.

The do not call law has some windows of opportunity for telemarketers.

So yes, if there are places to sign up do to save yourself the hassles--do so.

Not all cell phone users are equal in their use and access justamom and chris. The overall issue may seem like a scam. But I can tell you, when working for a national bank system in the mortgage compliance unit ---cross selling was big within that 18 month window and it was legal. And they used the main numbers provided by the customer.

So maybe justamom should look how her mom is using her cell phone. Does she give that as her main number or backup ---especially if you purchase items online -- many times the contact information is sold that way --just the same way cookies dog our key tracks.

Ordering magazines, online prize companies, etc. all sell your info. So if you use your cell phone for your life line -- figure out how to curtail the calls.

We have them and we don't answer them. The national scamster for auto warranties is the worst. Even though they had a ceast and desist order they did not.

  • I did sign up with the cellular no-call list and haven't had any calls trying to sell me extended automobile warranties or any other such unwelcome calls. I can't say it works for everyone, but it did work for me.

  • Just a mom,

Thank you for the excellent links.

  • Telemarketers CAN and DO call your cellphone. The numbers are sold to the companies. YOU have the option of whether or not you want to answer it. I place them on my call reject list in my phone AFTER I tell them NOT to call anymore.

  • Telemarketers can call the cell phone if that is the number you have been using with that company for the past 18 mos........and you are not a new customer of a new product.

  • I did get a call on my cell yesterday, and it is registered, the guy was nice enough to leave a voice mail saying he thought he had the wrong number, sorry.

What gave it away was the sound of a bunch of people pitching whatever it was in the background.

702 area code so yeah, I didn't answer it.
