What were the first fish you caught? How big? Who took you? Where were you? What bait were you using and where did you get the bait? What kind of pole/line were you using? Did you put it in a bait basket/bucket or on a stringer? Was/were your fish still whole when you went home? PS: Please encourage the kids to post their stories on here. Thanks, Rusty

  • FREETHINKER; "I threw the fish back in the water because the guy said they were not good for eating." That guy was as full of it as a Christmas goose. My dad enjoyed catching buffalo and canning them for eating later. Small buffalo make good trotline bait.

  • I caught the LARGEST crappie- ever caught in Saxet Lake, Victoria. Weighed 3 lbs- huge for a crappie! It's not the first fish I’ve ever caught but it was the biggest of its type and makes for a better fish’n story...
Caught it with "crappie nibbles" -LOVE 'em- the BEST incentive they ever made for a jig! They sell pink, white, yellow and green power bait- pink will get you a bite every time! http://www.landbigfish.com/tacklestor...

  • Sad, but true. I am 28 years old, lived on the gulf coast my whole life, and I've never caught a fish. I remember going fishing as a kid with my dad, but I was never into touching anything slimy or sitting there forever waiting for the fish to hook.

  • When I was a kid living in Victoria we had a river lot on the Guadalupe river between Cuero and Victoria. I think that it was called River Haven or something like that. I was fishing by myself and caught something. A neighbor saw that I had something and came down to see what it was. He said it was a Buffalo fish and he had never seen anyone catch one with a fishing pole. Also he had said I had a weird way of catching fish. The hook was not even in the mouth of the fish it had hooked his tail. He said I must have just pulled the line up and snagged the fish.I threw the fish back in the water because the guy said they were not good for eating. I don't know if this was my first time to fish but it was memorable to me. I probably used worms for bait which I got at the bait store in Victoria with my dad.

  • My grandpa worked a farm for Dr. Detar. There was a neat creek that ran through it. Grandpa took us fishing every weekend we would visit. My first fish was a sunperch. Gramps made us bait our own hook, and as I recall we even dug up the worms for event. We fished with simple cane poles and probably twine with a cork on it. I also remember that the hooks were tiny.

My last fishing trip added 3 huge bass to the cooking pan. I used an ultra lite and glowing green gigantic worms, and yes I baited my own hook. I would have stayed all day, but hub has the patience of a gnat except when in a deer stand. I can't handle the small space of the stands, so I can't gripe too much. Yeah, I can. I could have fished out that pond that day. It took about 20 minutes to catch those three. They were hungry.

  • I can't recall my exact first fish. My dad always took us fishing. It would be the San Antonio River. Trot lines. Perch for bait. The catfish would go in 5 gallon buckets. They stayed intact until we got home then straight to the clothes line T-pipe for the skinning ritual. YUK.

I do remember my daughters first fish. I have the picture. Catfish, worm for bait, San Antonio River, rod and reel. My sons first fish details were same as daughters just not caught on film. Great memories. Except the skinning thing...yuk
