The story about the hired gun, TOM HORN, allegedly killing a 14 year old boy near Iron Mountain,(northwest of Cheyenne) Wyoming happened on my game warden district. In Horn's defense, Willie Nickles was riding his dad (a "nester" and purported cattle rustler)'s horse. Thus a lot of folks thought at the long range of the shots it very well could've been a case of mistaken identity. Related to that incident was the infamous Johnson County Cattle War east of Buffalo, Wyoming. I did some patrolling in that part of the country as well. When we lived in Buffalo in 1966-67, the families of the cattle barons and homesteaders and sheep ranchers from that mess were still keeping the sores festering. A mere mention of the war could get a guy "popped in the chops."

OOPS, BISMARCK, ND
December 13, 2009 at 3:42 a.m.PATB: We never know when we'll have these "small world" moments do we? Our son was just a few months old the night our little family was eating in the Idlewild Cafe in Buffalo, Wyoming. When my trip to the bathroom was rudely interrupted by a loudmouth woman calling my name, there wasn't a big enough crack in the floor for me crawl into. There sat the parents and little sister of a 12 year classmate. It's often been said that Rusty couldn't run off from home because someone would know him and ruin the whole deal. When my job required me to fly into Bismarc, ND, our son quipped, "At least out there you wouldn't know anybody." Except for the son of my parents' favorite fishing buddies.
December 13, 2009 at 3:36 a.m.Under" small world" items. The last movie my wife and I saw was Tom Horn with Steve McQueen as Tom H.
December 10, 2009 at 8:07 a.m.It was on our anniversary in 1979. Haven't been to a theater since. We were smokers and were banned.
