Last night the history channel carried a two hour documentary called something akin to THE REAL HILLBILLY. It showcased the mountain culture from eking out a hardscrabble living to how hauling moonshine gave rise to NASCAR. When it came to mountain churches, many advocated drinking poison (some chose strychnine) and handling poisonous snakes. Some of the participants shown were really "gittin' down" all sweaty and hangin' on to those snakes (sometimes more than one). And they weren't holdin' any of 'em right behind the head either. Have any of you experienced anything like this? Ever hear of it?

  • I too have seen that documentary...fascinating. I have been to a Pentecostal church, once as a child, I do remember the speaking in tongues, luckily there was no poison & snakes.

  • Handling snakes, drinking poison and were they also speaking in tongues by chance? Pentecostals ways of identifying a "true believer" and I have certainly read about it but hope to never experience it!
