The Vic-Ad carried this story"Sikhs challenge US Army's ban on turbans, beards" When two Sikhs were recruited 2 or 3 years ago they were promised they could keep those items required of their faith. Now that their induction approaches they've been told they can't keep 'em. They are torn between serving this country and maintaining their religious symbols. If the military upholds its stance should these people be allowed to back out since the situation has changed so drastically?
After all, whenever have recruiters made untrue or unrealistic promises to prospects just to get their names on the line? What should happen to recruiters for pulling such Pelosi?

PYTHAGORAS; The downfall of this great country, besides totally turning our backs on GOD, will be all these "welcome everybody regardless of how it hurts the USA" idiots who need to buy chapstick
June 15, 2009 at 6:33 p.m.by the 5 gallon bucketsfull. They DESERVE to have chapped lips. Hey, you know hendoo prevents chapped lips, right?
Well said, Pythagoras.
June 15, 2009 at 5:38 p.m.We shave so that the our gas masks form the proper seal. We cut our hair because lice is prevalent in third world countries and the wilderness where we operate. These actions are considerd a type of force multiplier. The professional look of a well kept soldier is a wonderful side effect of the soldier adapting to his enemy. They will not keep their turbines or beards for this reason. Simple logic, nothing more.
Nothing against those guys but if you want to join an organization you have to comply with ther rules or you don't get in. If they were informed they could keep these things then they should be let go and the recruiters punished and/or re-educated.

June 15, 2009 at 10:15 a.m.This becomes and issue of religious beliefs over military requirements. Maybe the two can get religious dismissals. My son wasn't raised in a killing is OK belief system either, but choices have to be made.
June 15, 2009 at 8:20 a.m.I definitely do not think that they should be allowed to keep their beards and turbans while in uniform. The United States military is a proud organization based on many traditions. To break from these traditions is detrimental to the opperational effectiveness of the military unit. I completely respect and support everyone's religious freedom, heck I get up everyday and do my part to defend that and the multitude of rights we have as American Citizens, but what must be understood, is that by joining the military you are sacrificing some of your own freedoms in order to preserve the freedoms of others. Besides, they would still be allowed to wear their turbans when not in uniform. I do feel that the recruiters should be reprimanded for making false promises though, and that they should have the option of backing out of their contracts. However, if they truly feel strongly about serving this incredible country, the should be willing to make this sacrifice.
