In his, "Live Free or Die..." column today Walter wrote, "I doubt whether there are many Americans who think Congress has either the right or the competency to choose where they live, what clothes they wear, or what cars they drive. Yet many Americans stand ready to allow Congress to decide what doctors they go to and what treatment they receive." to me, about all they seem to be able to do is perpetuate what amounts to a continuing national picnic for those too damned lazy and sorry to work. Congress here reminds me of my dad's comment about a local college president, Dr. xxxxx, "That SOB couldn't doctor a horny toad."

I've been lucky with no major health problems. But I have known three people with cancer......and they have had their fate determined by an insurance company.

Sounds like you need a new insurance company. I have been seeing the same doctor for years using several insurance companies. None has ever told me whom I can and cannot see and if I want to see a specialist (as I did last week) I don't have to get a referral from my primary care doctor. Perhaps you have one of those nasty HMOs.
I DO NOT want some bureaucrat who only talks bureaucrap telling me which doctor I can see and how long it will take to see him. I don't want the government telling me that I have to wait several weeks because a particular ailment isn't life threatening. I think it's outrageous that the system in the UK will tell a person who smokes that he can't be treated for a heart problem because he uses tobacco and I don't want to see a similar system adopted here. Any chage to the American health care system mandated by the government must require that government employees, from the President and Congress critters on down to the water meter readers be required to use it.
