Only recently did I ever hear the term "cup towels" in regard to the pieces of cloth used for drying dishes. What other names have you heard or used?

  • There is a book written by E.Bagby Atwood titled The Regional Vocabulary of Texas I think it is out of print now. The book is research of the different words for the same thing across Texas. "What is a cloth used to dry dishes called" was one of them Charts giving the frequency of different words by areas was provided. Cup towel was the most frequently used. "dish towel" next "dish cloth" "tea towel" drying rag" or "drying cloth"

This area seemed to be about evenly divided between 'cup towel" and "dish towel" A few "tea towel' usage were reported in this area. In E Texas north and east of Houston dish towel was the more frequently used word. LA and Okla overwhelminly dish towel people.

Other words checked were word for a soft drink. Word for a burlap container A lot of different word for those in different parts of Texas I have lived in quite a few different parts of Texas and I really noticed that different words were commonly used in different parts of Texas.
