  • Mr. Ortega,

I suggest you research the crime statistics as published by the DPS. Comparing 2007 reported incidents to 2008 Victoria had a 12% increase, 3rd hightest in the state for citites with population between 50,000 and 100,000. From 2008 to 2009 Victoria had a 21.9% increase, 2nd highest in the state for same range of population. In a two year period the number of reported incidents grew from 3372 in 2007 to 4605 in 2009, a 36% increase in 2 years. We have a crime problem that is growing at a rate much higher then the other 28 similarly sized cities in the state.

My concern has been and continues to be no one seems to want to address this situation. We have a police force that is understaffed yet we (city) spends money on parks and trails while the crime rate continues to climb. Reality is we had 36% more crimes reported in 2009 then in 2007. In my mind this is a problem that should take a much higher priority then some of the "projects" the city undertakes. This is no reflection on the police department as I believe they are performing well with the resources allocated, they just need more resources.
