The latest study released by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention about mental health problems affecting half of Americans in their lifetime isn't at all surprising, but it is awakening.

I have a passion for mental health. To me, I feel it goes under the radar most times. It's like the redhead stepchild to primary health care.

But mental health problems is equally, and sometimes more devastating, as cancer and diabetes, it just can't always be seen.

I can say without shame that I have had my mental health problems. Panic attacks. I wrote a column about my experiences several months ago in our Your Life: Health section.

This latest study release by the CDC just helps push why funding for mental health is so important. This isn't just a trend and it isn't going away. We need to care more about the our community's mental health.

What are your thoughts? Do you side with the CDC's latest findings? I'd like to know. Comment on this blog or e-mail me at jrortega@vicad.com. And as always, you can follow me on Twitter @j_r_ortega
