Please permit me to brag a bit about some talented folks in our newsroom.

A small item in Sunday's edition mentioned the awards the Victoria Advocate won at the recent Southern Newspapers Publishers Association convention in Florida. Truly, these honors reflect on the entire team. You may see all of the winners and the judges' comments by clicking here.

I can't emphasize enough how much good work requires the commitment of everyone in the organization, but I also must single out a few individuals for extraordinary work:

  • Presentation editor Kimiko Fieg, who joined us about a year ago from the Corpus Christi Caller-Times, has transformed our front page into one of the best in the country. Under Kimiko's direction, the Advocate also was recognized recently for the best front page by the Inland Press Association.
  • Multimedia editor Robert Zavala, who joined us about a year ago from the Orange County Register, has brought to us the best graphics and illustrations in the storied history of the Advocate.
  • Public Service editor Gabe Semenza, who took on his new role about a year ago, has worked tirelessly on our special series "Fatal Funnel," which is receiving accolades even before it's completed.
  • Multimedia news director Bill Clough, who made the switch from audio about a year ago, has displayed talent and elegance almost never seen in the still -fledgilng world of newspaper video.
  • Managing editor Thomas Martinez, who joined us almost a year ago from Colorado, has spearheaded a variety of big and small projects.
  • Digital director Terry Owen, who joined us more than a year ago from South Dakota, isn't technically in the newsroom. But he and his team have made much of our Internet success possible.
Blogs are supposed to be short, so I won't go down the list of the remarkable group who have come together in the Advocate newsroom. They all are focused on making you, the readers, the real winners.
