I had the privilege Friday of helping hand out almost $7,000 to deserving Victoria teachers.

As a member of the Victoria Independent School District Education Foundation board of directors, I participated in a grant patrol. Our group handed out checks to seven teachers who had proposed innovative projects for their students.

I wish everyone could be part of such a tour and see the amazing work being done in our schools. All schools have flaws and deserve scrutiny, but we also can't thank great teachers enough.

The VISD Education Foundation exists to provide some small measure of thanks and support for our teachers.

Two of the grant recipients Friday were Becca Garcia and Rodney Plunkett for their project "SKIP—Students Kept in Place,” which will allow Mitchell Guidance Center students to participate in a community service project of painting murals throughout the city.
