A big advantage to having almost three decades of experience in the newspaper business is the connections you make across your career.

More than two decades ago, I started on the copy desk at the Sioux Falls (S.D.) Argus Leader two weeks after another desker, Pat Butler. We became instant friends, spending hours after deadline analyzing our page designs, copy editing and headlines into the wee hours of the morning. A few beers added flavor to those discussions.

Even after our careers took us in different directions, I still tried to follow Pat's admonition that every page should offer a reader something special, a little surprise from the routine. Now, Pat will be bringing that philosophy to the Victoria Advocate as our new sports editor.

He's had an impressive career, as you can see here on LinkedIn. He's qualified to run a newsroom, as he has before, but he's eager to be sports editor at a family-owned paper with the strength and influence of the Advocate. In this time when publicly trade media companies are imploding, independently owned newspapers are more attractive than ever.

Let Pat and me know what you'd like to see from the Advocate sports coverage, both in print and online. I look forward to many more spirited conversations with Pat about how to best serve our audience.
