  • Pick a paper, any other paper....Tampa, Houston, Chicago.....then try to tell me that this format is even close to usable. DO SOMETHING ABOUT THE PRINT. YOU CAN'T READ IT. WHY BOTHER TO PUT ON LINE IF YOU CAN'T READ IT!!!! The Avatars are minute...might as well just get rid of them. No pictures on the blogs. NO ORGANIZATION!!!! This is a joke. Just remove the whole thing and don't bother. It's not worth the effort.

  • Can you also move the most recent comments to the top?

    March 31, 2009 at 5:11 p.m.

  • maryann - There is currently not a page with a list of all recent comments, that is something we will have in the future.

  • the new site looks great, i love it

if it helps move on the trash blogs some, that's a good thing

  • I was looking for a "discussions page" with all the latest comments. Am I missing it? What do I look under, or is that no longer existing?

VA- I know you had to change as the other guys went out of business.

This will certainly take time to get used to. Glad to know that enhancements can be made.

    March 31, 2009 at 10:54 a.m.

  • AHHHHHHHHHH! Change. It's like everything has changed.

  • One crabby lady,

You're not really that crabby, are you? :) We'll work on making sure the ad drops down no more than once a day.

    March 30, 2009 at 9:39 p.m.

  • Not real thrilled with the new layout...but am willing to give it some time. As long as the drop down ad doesn't pop up everytime I switch pages...I'm willing to adapt.

  • I was doing this test in response to a request by someone who wanted me to remove a comment they made by accident. Since their comment was not a violation, I did not want to delete it and have that red violation message appear next to their profile pic.

My picture is there because it was my own comment I deleted, on purpose, so this user would not have this scarlet letter-type message left next to their name when their comment was removed. I also tested it out on my blog with a test account. Seems like if we delete a comment, the user's avatar and profile name stays, with that message shaded in red. This is something I'd like to see change, don't really care for that red box when comments are removed, violation or not.

See, I'm not that much of a forum police, am I? :)

    March 30, 2009 at 8:38 p.m.

  • LBB - I am interested to hear why you think I am the forum police. I have yet to delete any comments on this site, except for my own, as you can see if you scroll up above. I deleted one of my own comments as a test for how users can delete their own comments.

  • Like any change, it will take some getting used to. Enough with the pastels, however. I feel like I'm at Bed, Bath & Beyond for God's sake.

    March 30, 2009 at 6:11 p.m.

  • Umm, don't you think you could have worded this better?

    Password reset complete

Your password has been reset. You can reset it as often as you forget it.

    Now that is funny, lol

  • Half my screen is a huge ad for following the staff on Twitter...I don't want to follow you on twitter, I want to follow the comments on the stories.

    March 30, 2009 at 4:58 p.m.

  • One more thing, if some of you are still noticing that roll down ad on the home page each time you refresh, you may need to clear out your cookies. The ad only showed up once for me on Firefox, but on Internet Explorer, I had to switch to my default settings for cookies and clear them out. After that I only saw the ad once and that was it.

  • well i must admit i didnt know whether this was the victoria advocate or not when my browser finished loading. everything looks ok, it'll take a while before i can find everything but i think this was actually a good move.

    March 30, 2009 at 4:28 p.m.

  • Just getting rid of the rolling pop-up ad was a good start. Nothing more annoying than reading the headlines and having the whole page shift up and down. I’ll take the “wait and see” approach before I make final judgment on the web site change. It takes a while to get the bugs out after a conversion. X

  • Interesting...

Anyway, If you have a blog entry you want to edit you can click on the blog entry, and right under your profile name you should see a link to "Edit this entry."

Currently there is not a way to DELETE a blog, but in that same option to edit a blog, you can save your entry as a draft. This takes it out of public view.

On the YouTube embed, did you copy the embed code from the YouTube page? Not the HTML code, but the embed code. Let me know how that works and if you still have problems with your video.

The blog posted by Chris was moved out of the From Us portion of the blog listings, that is why you don't see it there. The From Us section features only reader blogs, not staff.

    March 30, 2009 at 4:01 p.m.

  • Pilot and others,

You can remove your own blog by editing it and saving it as a draft. That will remove the blog from the site.

In terms of removing comments to your blog, you'll need to report those as violations, as you did with article comments before. We'll report the ability to remove a comment from your blog as a requested enhancement.

We anticipate having a fairly lengthy list of enhancements we'll work on in the coming months. The good news about Django as a platform is it allows us to develop enhancements, as opposed to our previous system.

We didn't make the change as a cost-saving measure. The old company went out of business. We had to make a change, and we selected a system that has been universally praised as an industry leader.

Is it perfect? No, but we have the best Web team the Advocate has ever had working on improving it based on reader responses.

Items such as customizing the blog appearance will be down the list as we work on enhancements. We also don't plan immediately to add a blog counter because such features slow down how fast a site loads. A complaint on the old site was how slow it loaded.

I'm sure I'm missing here some of your list, but we'll whittle away at it.

  • How do I delete or edit my blog? Why didn't my youtube video show up on my blog? I also like to see how many hits/responses a blog has got.

    March 30, 2009 at 3:45 p.m.

  • Kenneth,
I don't think you'll have a problem with time-outs. In terms of the design, I find this one much more visually appealing, but that's a matter of taste. Designers like pastels as being softer on the eye.

One enhancement I hope we'll be able to make is spell-check for blogs. Until then, I'll be copying and pasting out of Word document because I like to use spell-check before posting unedited material.

    March 30, 2009 at 3:34 p.m.

  • My Thoughts,

I agree it's frustrating today, but I think you'll get used to it -- and we'll continue to improve it. This system is incredibly more powerful. We just need to sort through the various issues one at a time. Please hang in there.

    March 30, 2009 at 2:12 p.m.

  • Well, like all new things, there is an adjustment period. We have to get familiar with it. So far, I dislike it. Just cause it looks different, I guess. It still have that annoying, page-rolling, pop-up advertisement...lol. I'll adjust.....I think. :o)

    March 30, 2009 at 2:12 p.m.

  • If i am being honest Chris I dont care for it a bit. I liked it much better the other way. This site just fustrates me. Sorry. :(
