We had a quiz in the newsroom the other day, asking a few people whether they could name the five freedoms protected by the First Amendment.

Not surprisingly, many could not. We all tend to take our freedoms for granted.

On this celebration of our nation's independence, I join others in asking you to pause to remember the precious liberties safeguarded by our Constitution's most important amendment.

And, oh, the five freedoms covered are press, religion, speech, assembly and right to petition. Where would democracy be without these?
