KAVU's piece Friday on Kevin Nurse reminded me we need to get to the Mustang Bar & Grill to have a meal in honor of our friend Zane Steininger, who co-owns the joint. Kevin is the chef at Mustang and the miraculous recipient of a heart transplant.

We reported in March about the mysterious infection that almost killed Zane. I'm relieved to report he has been released from the hospital and appears on the road to recovery. A benefit to help defray Zane's medical bills has been set for June 13 at Riverside Convention Center.

Another medical mystery and then miracle hit even closer to home for the Advocate. Our general manager, Brenda Miller-Fergerson, has been hospitalized by a serious infection. We're thrilled to report she's home now after weeks in intensive care and getting stronger every day.

We don't know what to make of these medical mysteries, but we sure celebrate the miracles. Kevin Nurse's story is worth revisiting. We first wrote about the heart he received from a Victoria donor in a three-part series that began in August 2008. In case you missed that remarkable series almost two years ago, you still may find it on our online archives. (You need to scroll down from this link to find the three headlines starting each series installment.)

That Zane and Kevin share separate medical miracles in one small joint on Crestwood Street is another of life's many mysteries. Here's to the miracles that brought us Kevin from New Jersey and brought back Zane and Brenda to their friends and family in Victoria.
