I wish you could have been part of the magical evening Friday at the annual "Beat the Odds" banquet. You wouldn't be cynical about public education if you had been there.

Nine students who have overcome hardships received scholarships, thanks to the generosity of Mary and Gary Cox and other Victoria benefactors. But the real winners were all of us in the room who heard the students' inspirational stories.

Paula and I had the good fortune of sitting at the same table as the keynote speaker, Montse Garcia, a 2007 "Beat the Odds" scholarship winner now attending Trinity University. Garcia was remarkably poised beyond her years as she told the crowd, "Obstacles are there to make us better, not bitter."

As editor, I get invited to many events around Victoria. I am blessed to have a front-row seat to the best this community has to offer. The students honored Friday night are the best of the best.
