Edna man barricades mother in home with machete

At approximately 8:52 p.m. on Thursday, July 10, the Edna Police Department (EPD) was dispatched to the 500 Block of Harlem Street in reference to a male subject with a machete. Upon EPD and the Jackson County Sheriff Office’s responses to the scene, the male subject and his mother were barricaded in his residence.
The male subject, identified as David Hawkins, 59, was making threats to his mother’s life if she were to leave the residence. The Victoria Police Department (VPD) SWAT team was called to the scene to assist.
EPD and the Jackson County Sheriff Office were able to remove Hawkins’ elderly mother from the residence through a rear window without harm. She was then transported to the Jackson County Hospital by Jackson County EMS.

Hawkins was subsequently apprehended after officers utilized a less lethal taser. He had very minor injuries.
Hawkins has been charged with four felonies: aggravated assault against a public servant, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, terroristic threat to impair public services/ place the public in fear of serious bodily injury/ influence the government, and resisting arrest with a deadly weapon.
The investigation is ongoing.
