Pictured in his July 2 start, Victoria’s Brock Lambert (18) got the nod for Thursday night’s home contest against Brazos Valley. He pitched six innings and allowed only one earned run on two hits in a no-decision for the Generals.

The Victoria Generals saw their five-game winning streak snapped at Riverside Stadium with a 5-3 loss to Brazos Valley in a Texas Collegiate League Thursday night.

The setback dropped Victoria’s record to 20-11.

With two men aboard and two outs in the top of the fourth, Brazos Valley plated the game’s first run with an RBI single. In the home half of the fifth, Victoria took its first lead of the contest.

Infielders Justin Vossos and Sampson Pugh began the inning with back-to-back singles. A Pugh single sent Vossos to third. With two men on and nobody out, Caleb Cotton, the seventh batter in the order, smashed a two-run double to right centerfield to give Victoria the lead.

“I was seeing him pretty well in the first at-bat. I kind of realized he would be throwing a little in, and he had a little sink on his ball, so I just prepared for that,” Cotton said. “He gave me a good inside pitch and I was ready for it and took advantage of it.”

Later in the inning, Cotton advanced to third on a wild pitch. However, he was thrown out at the plate trying to score on a infield grounder to third base. The score remained 2-1 Victoria until a four-run rally by Brazos Valley in the eighth gave the visitors the lead for good.

  • Victoria plated a run in the bottom of the eighth on an infield RBI single from Diego Diaz. Down 5-3 in the bottom of the ninth, the Victoria offense was retired in order to close it out.

“I feel like just as a team, we’ve got to be better with runners in scoring position, give our pitchers a shot, and we’ve just got to come back better tomorrow,” Cotton added.

The Generals tallied eight hits compared to only three for Brazos Valley. Cotton ended the night 2-for-4 at the plate.
