The UHV softball team got off on the right foot Friday by picking up two wins during the opening day of pool play at the Gulf Coast Invitational.
The 24th-ranked Jaguars began the day behind a one-hit shutout from Peyton Branham to down Faulkner University 4-0, before striking early to down 19th-ranked University of Mobile 7-1. The Jaguars (4-5) will wrap up pool play Saturday with a 1:30 p.m. contest against Spring Hill College.
Branham had a perfect game going the sixth when Maggie Tipton broke up the no-hitter with a one-out single up the middle. It would be the lone base runner for Faulkner (8-2) as Branham would strike out eight and not issue a walk.
Four different players collected RBIs to back Branham’s pitching performance.
Emily Flores drove Lisa Sosa home with a two-out single in the fourth to put the Jaguars up 1-0.
UHV would then erupt for three runs in the fifth. Alyssa Adames doubled home Marissa Longoria, and Sosa followed with a two-out double to plate Adames. Angelica Davidson then singled home Sosa for a 4-0 lead, and that would be all the runs Branham would need.
Adames, Sosa and Gabby Davila each had two hits in the game as the Jaguars picked up 10 hits in the contest.
In the second game, the Jaguars would strike for three runs in the first inning on a two-run double by Davidson and an RBI single from Ashley Reyna.
After Mobile would tally their lone run against Kelsey Tidrick in the fourth, the Jaguars would answer back with a pair of runs in the fifth and the seventh.
Reyes and Flores each delivered RBI singles in the fifth, while Davidson and Flores added RBIs in the seventh.
Tidrick went the distance to improve to 3-1 in the circle as she allowed one run on four hits and one walk, while striking out two.
