Not long ago, I heard a sermon and the minister explained that when you are faced with tragedies, hard times, or obstacles in life we often turn in different directions but we should always “start with what you know”. We know through the Bible that there is nothing that God cannot fix and that if you believe, you will be saved and go to heaven. Simple enough.

I began thinking about this simple statement of faith and realizing it really extends to much more than our spiritual life.

All my life I have been taught that I am blessed to be living in a country that is under God’s protection and the protection of the Constitution. I saw prayer taken out of schools, people who want “under God” taken out of our pledge, states who closed churches during the pandemic, people who want to shut down the second amendment, my President barred from social media and the violation of the first amendment and so much more. But, if I start with what I know, this is wrong and we need to have God back in our schools, lives and government and our constitution upheld.

I was always raised to honor our military. In Afghanistan, American citizens were left behind, military pulled out and did not bringing our translators with them. The America I have known would never do what Biden did. I know that our military history is not one of cowardice but our current leadership is.

Our forefathers were deeply religious men who prayed and believed in God. Yet, today women say that it is their body and that in the name of freedom, we have the right to kill children through abortion. Our forefathers often hung the ten commandments on their state and federal buildings and the ten commandments state, “Thou Shalt not Kill.” If we start with what we know, we know that killing is wrong and our country was based on these religious beliefs.

Some people believe that socialism and communism is good, but all my life I have been taught and have seen what havoc socialism brings and what evil spurs on communism. If I start with what I know, I know that our form of government as it was laid out by our forefathers is the best on the planet.

We learned about the civil war in school. These days there are delusional people who believe that by teaching CRT to our children, making them feel somehow responsible and less of a person because they are white, it will erase the sins of people who lived hundreds of years ago. If we start with what we know, we all know that you do not lift people up by tearing others down.

I remember hearing about polio. People were scared and children were dying. Dr. Salk invented the vaccine and it worked. One dose and you were protected. Anyone remember the Hong Kong Flu in the 60’s? No one lost their job over it, no one was shamed or threatened if someone in their family had the disease, they did not close churches, businesses were not closed, the economy moved on, people had to live. What we know is that viruses come and go, we take the proper precautions, you and your doctor work out a solution, you choose what you want your children to do and you move on.

I think that be you conservative or liberal, there are things you know to be true. What we are seeing on some nightly news is not truth or science or what we know but lies they want you to believe. Maybe it is time to quit being afraid, listen to what we know and take back our country.
