Welcome to our new blog, Digitally Speaking. In this blog, we'll talk about all things digital, especially as it relates to our work here at the Advocate or on our website.
And speaking of our website, by now, you've had a few days to peruse our new site. We hope you like it, or at least are getting comfortable using it.
We think new site is a huge step forward for us, and it will allow us become more entrenched and at ease offering digital options for our readers.
One big change for us is that this is one, cohesive computer application. Before, we used a marriage of a front-end system for our newsroom to use, an Italian-based system we used since 2008, and a different, back-end system for our digital production.
Let's just say it was a difficult marriage.
We're now unified, one system that makes everyone happy. It allows our reporters or other staff members to use it to write stories, enter photos or information wherever there is an internet connection. A cliche we like to use in the news industry is digital first. This new program allows us to be digital first, or as I like to say, digital now, and digital all the time.
As our content producers are doing that, the new system allows us to also design our award-winning printed product without the complications that came with a marriage of two bad systems.
What does all this mean for you, the reader?
A lot. As we move forward, you will see better story presentations on the web, more hyperlinks in stories, and more add-ons that make it easier to understand the story or its effects.
Our site also maintained its responsiveness, which simply means that our site will adapt to whichever kind of device you are using to view it.
In the meantime, if you have a question about the new site, don't hesitate to reach me at the contact information listed below.
