Port Lavaca sunrise that can't be ignored

Raymond Butler has spent a lifetime living on the bay and has seen many sunrises. He said this September 2018 sunrise over Lavaca Bay in Port Lavaca was different. “I have not seen a sunrise as beautiful as this one. Busy with work, but this I could not ignore.” He took the photo from his backyard looking to the northeast about 7:30 a.m.

Lavaca Bay Foundation members will learn during their Thursday meeting from a nonprofit with a similar mission.

James Dodson, the project manager for the San Antonio Bay Partnership, will speak about how it has grown, its recent activities and ways it can partner with the Lavaca Bay Foundation so they can be good stewards of both bay systems, according to a news release.

The meeting is at 6 p.m. Thursday at the Nautical Landings Community Room, 106 S. Commerce St. in Port Lavaca.

During its April meeting, members of the foundation heard from Paul Montagna, the endowed chair for ecosystems and modeling at the Harte Research Institute for Gulf of Mexico Studies, who collected samples from the bay during the past 30 years.

The foundation formed in 2018. Organizers ask people to bring friends as they continue to research the health of the bay.
