Port Lavaca pier reopens

Michael Linton and his fiancee, Samantha Garcia, walk down the Bayfront Peninsula Pier, which was rebuilt after being destroyed by Hurricane Harvey in August 2017. Linton said, “It’s the pride of your hometown and who you are. It’s not (one of the Seven Wonders) of the World, but at the same time, it’s the pride of your hometown and who you are. ... We were raised here going to the pier, and then when your kids are born, you want to bring them to the pier and enjoy the experience of fishing, relaxation and family.” Garcia added, “I hope nothing tears it down again.”

The city of Port Lavaca will receive a $200,000 grant to create a walking trail at Bayfront Peninsula Park.

The grant comes from the Texas Parks and Wildlife Commission, which announced this week that it had granted a total of $3.81 million to communities across the state to create trails.

Port Lavaca’s grant will cover creating a 1-mile walking trail with solar lighting, benches, a water fountain and a bike rack, as well as connection to existing amenities, according to the announcement.

In its 2012 waterfront master plan, Port Lavaca identified Bayfront Peninsula Park as having “the potential to spur downtown redevelopment, assuming pedestrian connections and parking lots are designed to complement both areas.”
