Two men have been arrested in connection with the theft of bronze headstone markers in a Van Vleck cemetery, according to a news release by the Matagorda County Sheriff’s Office.
Within the past month, entire bronze headstone markers had been stolen from Roselawn Memorial Park. The bronze markers, which weigh between 20 and 200 pounds, appeared to have been pried off the granite headstones that marked gravesites in the cemetery. The replacement costs of the stolen markers can be several thousands of dollars each, depending on their size.
Several of the stolen bronze markers were recovered, and the sheriff’s office has arrested Christian Rashad Henderson, 27, of Bay City, and James Lee Stephens, 47, of Bay City, in connection with the crime.
Henderson has been charged with engaging in organized criminal activity with multiple charges of theft of bronze and two counts of vandalizing, damaging, or offending a final resting place.
Stephens was charged with four counts of theft of bronze.
Another Bay City man is also being sought.
“This type of crime will not be tolerated because a person’s final resting place should be sacred,” Sheriff Skipper Osborne said in the news release.
The investigation is ongoing, and the sheriff’s office is still seeking information about the crime. Those with information about the crime are asked to contact Sgt. Steve Riddles at 979-245-5526.
