The Sargent Swing Bridge across the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway in Matagorda County was hit by a barge Thursday night and was closed to vehicle traffic Friday.

The bridge was hit by a barge at 11 p.m. Thursday, according to a news release from the Texas Department of Transportation.

The bridge, which connects Sargent Island to Farm-to-Market Road 457, provides access for nearly 50 permanent residents. Another 150 vacation homes also are on the island.

No injuries were reported. Barge traffic was not affected, according to the Texas Department of Transportation.

TxDOT crews worked Friday to assess damage to the bridge and determine the necessary repairs and time needed to resume vehicle service.

An agency spokesman said drivers need to plan accordingly in the meantime.
