More than 30 bundles of cocaine discovered during traffic stop near Edna

The Texas Department of Public Safety discovered 32 bundles of cocaine during a traffic stop Tuesday on U.S. 59 near Edna.

More than 30 bundles of cocaine were discovered during a traffic stop Tuesday near Edna, according to a Department of Public Safety news release.

About 4 p.m. Tuesday, a highway patrol trooper stopped a 2013 Chevrolet Malibu that was traveling north on U.S. 59 near Edna for a traffic violation. A Wharton County K-9 was then called to the scene and alerted his trainer that there was a substance in the vehicle. Officials discovered 32 bundles of cocaine, according to the news release. Each bundle weighed one kilogram.

The driver, Jaime Gomez, 54, of Houston, was arrested for possession of a controlled substance greater than 400 grams. He was taken to the Jackson County Jail but had bonded out by Friday evening.
