Severed cable impairs 911 service in 5 counties

An El Campo man died Wednesday after he was injured in an accident at a construction site.

Anthony Pedro Cruz, 23, of El Campo, died Wednesday afternoon, said Sgt. Jim Staude, of the Wharton County Sheriff's Office.

A second man, Jose Luna, 55, was listed in critical condition in a Houston hospital, Staude said.

Both men were working at a construction site at 243 Marek Lane in El Campo.

James Henslee, 73, of El Campo, was operating a front-end loader that was moving heavy equipment at the site.

Henslee was being directed by another person, and neither saw Luna or Cruz on the side, Staude said.

When Henslee placed a large tire and a set of wheels down, both Cruz and Luna were crushed by the tire, he said. The accident occurred about 11:30 a.m. Wednesday.

Cruz and Luna were flown by helicopter to a Houston hospital.

Luna is a contract worker, and Cruz and Henslee are employed by Frank Marek, Staude said.

The Wharton County Sheriff's Office is investigating.
