Contractors build road and railway at Formosa Plastics

Dunn Services Inc. contractors prepare a roadway for a railroad as part of the Formosa Plastics expansion that began in 2015.

A Texas City woman was flown to a Houston hospital with injuries Thursday morning after a three-vehicle wreck near Formosa Plastics.

Sgt. Ruben San Miguel, with the Texas Department of Public Safety, said the wreck happened at 6:42 a.m. July 26 on Farm-to-Market Road 1593 and Gate 5 of Formosa Plastics in Point Comfort.

A 2010 Kenworth truck- tractor, driven by Reimundo Mascareno, 51, of Humble, was towing a 1996 semi-trailer north on Farm-to-Market Road 1593 Thursday morning as Selena Avalos, 23, of Texas City, was stationary in a 2016 Ford Edge facing west and waiting to turn left at FM 1593 and Gate 5 at Formosa.

Avalos failed to yield the right-of-way and attempted to make a left turn unto FM 1593. Mascareno then struck Avalos’ vehicle, causing the Ford Edge to shove into a 2016 Dodge Ram 3500 that was stationary facing south, waiting to turn left into Gate 5 from FM 1593.

The Dodge Ram was driven by Kelton Rodriguez, 21, of Louise.

Both the Ford Edge and the Dodge Ram came to a rest on the northbound lane of FM 1593.

Avalos was the only person injured in the wreck, and was flown to Memorial Hermann Hospital in Houston with non life-threatening injuries, San Miguel said.
