The Victoria County Veterans Council will host a Memorial Day ceremony at 11 a.m. Monday in DeLeon Plaza to honor local men and women who were killed in military service and veterans who died in 2008.
"It's for the public, and we urge them to be there with their kids and grandkids to learn more about our veterans," said Peter B. Riesz, a member of the veterans council who helped organize the event.
Victoria County Sheriff T. Michael O'Connor will be the guest speaker and Gary Moses will emcee the ceremony, Riesz said.
A representative from each of the 10 member organizations of the veterans council will hang wreaths in honor of their veterans during the event, and the names of veterans who have died since last year's Memorial Day ceremony will be read aloud, Riesz said. About 170 names are on the list, Riesz said.
The opening and closing prayer will be delivered by the Rev. David Berger, associate pastor of Our Lady of Victory Cathedral.
The ceremony will close with Mike Martinak playing taps on trumpet and the Catholic War Veterans firing squad sounding the traditional three volleys to honor the deceased, Riesz said.
A brief ceremony will be at 7:30 a.m. Monday at the Victoria County Courthouse before groups of veterans take flags to 30 different city and county cemeteries, Riesz said.
