Challenger Michael Cloud ousted veteran incumbent Mary Anne Wyatt Tuesday in the race for the Victoria County Republican Party chair post.
Cloud had 878 votes, or 57 percent of the total Republican votes cast in the runoff. Wyatt picked up 658 votes, or 43 percent.
"I thought I had a good chance," Cloud said. "I had a good team and a lot of people working for me."
He said his next step will be to help conduct the tea party event Thursday at Riverside Park and then spend time with his family.
"Of course, I'm excited," he said. "But I've got a lot of work to do."
Wyatt said she wasn't surprised by the loss and feels the low voter turnout hurt her.
A total of 2,031 people cast ballots in the Democratic and Republic runoffs. George Matthews, the county elections administrator, said that amounts to 3.95 percent of the registered voters.
"The people have spoken," Wyatt said. "I wish him the best."
Cloud, 34, is the owner of a small media production and marketing company called Bright Idea Media.
He said he was looking forward to bringing an open and more pro-active leadership style that involves other people. He said he wanted a party that shares information and provides avenues for people to get involved.
Cloud had said there are so many people in the community who want to get involved, but they often don't know how to get involved. He also said he believes the party could do more in the off years by conducting candidate training and devising strategies.
Wyatt, 59, is an attorney and title examiner for Stewart Title of Victoria. She's been chairwoman for 10 years.
Wyatt said during her campaign she believed the advantages she had over Cloud are experience and track record. She said since becoming the county chair, the party picked up a Republican sheriff, a Republican district attorney and that three of the four district judges are Republican.
Wyatt said before the runoff, whichever way the election went, she'd like to cooperate with Cloud in building the party.
"I think he's got some good ideas and I think he does want to energize some of the younger people," she said. "I think that's great and I'd love to work with him on that."
