Brian YantaBEEVILLE - The Tri County Commercial Female Sale occurred on April 10, with an obvious improving economy and coalescing weather conditions to boot. Five-hundred and nine head were consigned and sold from Bee, Goliad, Refugio and the surrounding counties for almost $500,000.

This year with our pre-existing drought conditions and lack of cattle in our local region, as a result of liquidation and destocking situations, the committee also sought cattle from outside the area to offer our ranchers quality cattle.

Thanks to all the ranches in our area that consigned high quality cattle to the Sixth Annual Tri County Commercial Female Sale and to our buyers, who bid on the cattle.

Also thank you to Leo Casas III for auctioneering, and special thanks to our volume buyers: Frank Helvely, W. E. Butler, Gilbert Vela, Bill Carriger, Larell Meischen and David Nesbit.

Averages: pairs, $1,359 on 140 head; breds, $1,152 on 130 head; and open or exposed heifers, $795 on 240 head.

The Female Sale is committed to the youth in the Tri County area and again plans to make a $1,000 donation to each county 4-H program as it did last year, which totals almost $20,000.

Bob Gayle, who engineered the idea of the sale more than seven years ago, said "I think it is a 'win-win' for everyone involved. Not only are producers profiting from the added dollars, but they can also feel assured that they are helping the youth when they consign."

Special thanks to our cattle judges: Brandon Critendon, Port Lavaca; Clay Neel, Refugio; and Maurice Janda, Gonzales, who placed the sale order.

Thanks too to our sponsors: Ag Med Supply, Beeville Livestock Commission, Capital Farm Credit, and Lyssy and Eckel Feeds.

Our committeemen should also be recognized who covered all the ground work: Jim Bluntzer, Rodney Butler, Pat Calhoun, Leo Casas, Bob Gayle, Jerry Gray, Clay Neel, William Warwas, and myself.

Look for us next year in 2011. For more information on how you can consign please contact a county extension agent: Bee County, Kyle McManus 361-362-3280; Goliad County, myself, 361-645-8204; and Refugio County, Jerry Gray, 361-526-2825.

Brian Yanta is the Goliad County Extension agent.
