1: Why did you choose the industry?
I've done hair for 24 years. It's a great creative outlet. I sew and paint, too. Melinda Alvarez, the shop's nail technician, enjoys working with people and what she does. She said a job in a salon allows flexible hours.
2: Describe your first day in business.
It was on 01-02-10 and we did that on purpose. We had a grand opening party and got a great response from people. We were excited about being part of the downtown scene.
3: Describe a typical workday.
There isn't really a typical workday. We're open Tuesday through Saturday, and we encourage people to make appointments. We stay open late on Thursdays and, after 5 p.m., we serve wine to our customers.
4: Why open up shop in the Crossroads?
I've been here for seven years and have a studio in my home. There was a bit of serendipity involved, though. We found space available and had people helping out along the way. When my daughter started at Nazareth Academy, it seemed like a good time to start up.
5: Is it difficult to find employees in our workforce? How do you find workers?
It's not easy. We have a part-time receptionist we're training to be an assistant. We have that aesthetic vibe we're trying to keep, so we're not in a hurry. Being the biggest is not our goal and we want to make sure we find the right people.
6: What advice would you give others starting a new business?
I have a few tips. Love what you do and you'll never work a day in your life. Prepare for the ups and downs and be kind and generous to people. It comes back to you. Word of mouth is the best form of advertising you can get.
7: What is the biggest challenge your industry faces?
Fashion is always evolving and perceptions of what is beautiful change, depending on what stage of life a person is in. We try to make all customers look and feel as good as they can. I love Marilyn Monroe's quote, "Imperfection is beauty, madness is genius and it's better to be absolutely ridiculous than absolutely boring."
8: What is something most people don't realize about running a small business?
The time and work that goes into it. Also, it's important to take care of yourself, eat well and stay positive. You can't be creative when you're stressed, and this is a creative business. Here, we work hard to honor our appointments, but we don't kill ourselves working 70 hours a week. Family is important to us.
9: In your time running your business, what is your best story?
It seems like so many things happened at once. We opened in January then, shortly after, Victoria in Motion published. I became part of the Main Street Initiative just after we opened. I'm excited to be part of this and would like to be part of a catalyst of more going on downtown. We'd love to have more merchants come downtown. There's room for everyone.
10: Where do you see yourself and your business in five years?
We have a couple of irons simmering. We'll add new lines to our retail section and will probably expand into other services. We're pacing ourselves, though. We're taking our time and making sure each step is in the right direction. We're keeping this vibe and don't want to be like anyplace else.
