PORT LAVACA - A 48-year-old Port Lavaca man was in critical condition Wednesday night at Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio after his bicycle hit the side of a vehicle Tuesday night.
Richard Simpson was riding his bicycle north on Half League Street at 8:15 p.m. when it hit the right side of a GMC Envoy driven by Nathan Marek, 40, of Port Lavaca, said Lt. Brandon Riedel, Port Lavaca Police Department.
Marek's vehicle was headed east on West Austin Street when the bicycle entered the intersection, Riedel said.
Marek had the green light according to witnesses, Riedel said.
Marek was not injured in the collision.
Simpson was transported to Citizens Medical Center and then to Brooke Army Medical Center, Riedel said.
Wednesday morning, he was listed in serious condition, a hospital spokesman said.
Auto-bicyclist accidents do not happen often in Port Lavaca, he said.
"I've been here two years, and this is the second one," he said. "The first one was minor injuries."
No citations were issued, and police are still investigating the wreck, Riedel said.
