GOLIAD - A truck carrying an oil workover rig caught fire on the Manahuilla Creek Bridge west of Goliad about 9:30 a.m. Friday.

The truck was heading west on U.S. Highway 59 when it blew a tire and struck a guardrail before coming to a rest and catching fire on the bridge, according to Chief Deputy Bryan Williamson with the Goliad County Sheriff's Office.

The driver of the truck escaped uninjured, Williamson said.

The Texas Department of Public Safety, Goliad Fire Department, Schroeder Volunteer Fire Department and Texas Department of Transportation also responded to the scene.

By 10:36 a.m., two-way traffic in the northbound lane of U.S. Highway 59 was open, Williamson said.

"Due to the weight of the rig and the load on the bridge, time was taken to formulate a plan to remove the burned truck from the bridge," Williamson said, adding that the truck weighed more than 110,000 pounds.

Two cranes were used to remove the truck from the bridge, a process that took into the evening to complete.
