"Baldo in Victoria" contest
Aug. 19, 2010 at 3:19 a.m.
On Oct. 7, Hector Cantu, the co-creator of the comic strip Baldo, will be coming to Victoria as a guest speaker for the Victoria College Lyceum Lecture Series. Centered on a teenager named Baldo, the nationally syndicated comic follows Baldo's life with his family living between the influences of both U.S. and Latin American cultures.
In honor of Cantu's visit and of October being Hispanic Heritage Month, the Victoria Advocate, in conjunction with The Victoria College, is holding a "Baldo in Victoria" contest. We want you to write a script for the comic and the top three winners will be drawn by Advocate multimedia artists and featured in the newspaper.
Each entry can be up to four panels and no more than 50 words total. Entries need to be written in script form featuring the regular characters of the comic strip. For example:
Baldo: "Hey, did you read the Victoria Advocate today?"
Tia Carmen: "Why, yes I did."
Baldo: "Can you believe they're doing a contest featuring us?"
Entries should tie into Hispanic culture, Hispanic Heritage Month and/or the city of Victoria.
Entries should be e-mailed to firstname.lastname@example.org or via snail mail to 311 E. Constitution St., Victoria, TX 77901, ATTN: Baldo in Victoria by Sept. 16
A panel of three judges, one from the Advocate, one from Victoria College and Hector Cantu himself will pick the top three winners.
The second and first runnerups will have their scripts featured in the comic on Oct. 5 and 6 respectively. The grand prize winner will have their script featured Oct. 7 and will be presented with a signed book by Cantu himself at the Lyceum presentation.
