Massage, facials, tanning and spa services

1: Why did you choose the industry?

I wanted to help people. With massage, facials and other therapies, I am able to help my clients look and feel great. With all the stress in our modern lives, it is essential to have some relaxation.

2: Describe your first day in business.

When I first started my business, I took clients by pager appointments. I was thrilled to see the need for my services and I got busy really quickly.

3: Describe a typical workday.

I have a massage and facial license, so I wear many hats. I might be massaging, doing facials, tinting or perming lashes, body wraps or cellulite treatments, etc. Every day is different, except that I really enjoy making my clients feel better.

4: Why open up shop in the Crossroads region?

I am a second-generation business owner in Victoria. My dad owns a business here and I also ran a different one for him for 13 years. This is a great place to own a business.

5: Is it difficult to find employees in our workforce? How do you find workers?

It is easy to find a receptionist. I usually run an ad in the Advocate. It is much harder to find therapists. Right now my daughter Megan is my receptionist and I love getting to spend time with her every day. My clients also love her.

6: What advice would you give others starting a new business?

Do something you feel passionate about. It doesn't feel like work when you love what you do. I also encourage others to look into vocational schools that will help them reach their goals. I also attended Victoria College and received my associate's degree in business.

7: What is the biggest challenge your industry faces?

I think it is important to stay up-to-date on the latest technologies. I feel fortunate that this has been a steady business, even in this economy. I run specials and keep my business competitive.

8: What is something most people don't realize about running a small business?

Having a business and being self-employed means no guarantees on being paid. There is some book work, etc., but I really don't let that part of my work consume a lot of time. I focus on being positive and things just always work out.

9: In your time running your business, what is your best story?

My best stories are the clients who tell me how much better they feel after a service. Whether it is a client dealing with the loss of a loved one, divorce or just a crick in their neck, knowing I have helped them just makes my day.

10: Where do you see yourself and your business in five years?

I hope to expand my business. I currently carry make-up and skin care and I would like to increase my retail business.
