Citizens Medical Center received a triple performance achievement award for meeting quality improvement guidelines for coronary artery disease, heart failure and stroke.

The hospital received three gold performance achievement awards for each category.

Last year, it received two gold performance achievement awards for coronary artery disease and heart failure and a silver performance achievement award for stroke.

"Citizens Medical Center is dedicated to making our cardiac unit and stroke program among the best in the country," said hospital CEO David Brown.

The awards come from "Get with the Guidelines," a program of the association that aims to make long-term improvement outcomes in cardiac and stroke patients easy for professionals.

The program helps the hospital implement appropriate evidence-based care and protocols to help reduce the number of deaths related to the three categories.

Each year about 325,000 people suffer a recurrent heart attack, 5.7 million people have heart failure and 795,000 people have a stroke, according to the association and American Stroke Association.
